My art Weblog

As I mentioned on the Homepage, the main purpose of my website is to share my paintings with friends and other leisure painters. I have met so many like minded friends while I, or they, have been sitting on some harbour wall or in some remote gateway. The web just seemed like a good way to communicate and share work.

I have always enjoyed sketching and painting and was lucky enough to study Art Main for 3 years at college. I then worked in Primary schools as a classroom teacher and Head teacher for 39 years.

My own artwork was an occasional hobby during this time, but promoting curriculum art and design, plus in service training for staff, was an important part of my time in school. I also worked with a number of very talented teachers who kept the ideas coming.
For many years I have enjoyed theatre set design and set painting with local amateur companies, in particular Crediton Operatic and Dramatic Society. See www.codsonline.com
This gives me a regular opportunity to design and paint on a much larger scale, and to work co-operatively with other people. (Running the societies website also links well with my photographic aspirations! )

After retirement I started to paint more frequently, spending quite a bit of time on subjects located in the Isles of Scilly and West Cornwall. (Indeed the domain name and my email address were selected because of the inspiration of the Scillies and the many artists and craftspeople who live there.... I hope they don‘t mind!)

Most of my subjects now come from Devon, though holidays give the opportunity to go further afield, and I have painted in Southern Spain and Venice, West Wales, the Canary Islands etc.
In addition to my own painting, I undertake commissions for landscape and seascape paintings.

I am indebted to Ray Balkwill and the late Lionel Aggett for their huge encouragement and inspiration. I also look at the works of J.M.Turner, Edward Seago and John Yardley and say to myself... Dream on!

Being a member of the local Art group, the Newton St Cyres Art Group, is very helpful. They have regular talks and some excellent day courses with professional artists, as well as giving the opportunity to exhibit a number of times through the year.
I have also had my own exhibitions the local library.
